This image is the actual scape were the base is located. The size of the terrain is 441.00 square kilometers. In
the original designs and script, the base was said to be located on a mesa positioned atop a mountain. I chose the mountain in the center of the image to fit this need.

Once I had the terrain I wanted, I imported the mesh into Lightwave so I could work on it. Those of you who have Terragen know it will export a lot of different formats, so this was an easy task. Theoretically I could have built the terrain in Lightwave but doing it in Terragen made it possible to have the concept of the scape, textures and lighting done in one program, so now all I have to do is reproduce this in Lightwave which for the most part is easy.
Beside when the render department want to do a running shot of the Mesa, it would be better to do it in Terragen as this program will do a pretty good job of atmospherics and landscape rendering.

At this point I removed the mountain so that building and positioning the cylon base would be easier.
=>
In this next image, if you look in the center of the mountain . . . the black bits are the "foot prints" of the buildings that comprise the cylon base. With that being done you will see everything fits on top here very nicely. |

This was a design concept presented to me by R J Andron at Battlestar
Fanfilm's. My project was to construct this Cylon Base in 3d, giving it a
more detailed look in the same style as the 1978 era Battlestar Galactica. |
=>
I tried to remain as faithful to the original design as possible. I only changing
small sections in order to have the structure fit properly. Basic dimensions were
provided with the drawing and I scaled the model to 100% for the full 3d version. |
| |
<=
The concept of the base is that it is modular and able to be dismantled and air-lifted
at a moments notice. The original design had no plan for a main gate to be put
in, so I placed an underground entrance on the south end to facilitate a more
useable look. |
=>
The main gate has a depth of 25 feet, with a gradient slop of 30 degrees at 125ft.
A metal causeway spans the distance of the entrance way to give access to controls
for releasing the upper portion modular section of the main Garrison building. |

This shot reveals the upper portion of the Garrison C.O.C. with it's roof top
entrance and communications array |
=>
The Original design had the causeways leading from the main Garrison to the outter turrets level. I changed the concept and gave the causeways a slight incline, this gave the base a more built up feel to it and also made it possible to add more hieght to the C.O.C. section of the Garrison |

<=
These were just a few night time shots to show off the lighting used in the design of the base.
There are a total of 450 lights used in the base scene as a whole.
=>
Most of the lighting is used as archetectural lighting which will not only help in setting the mood but would also assist in Radiositu renders as well. |
| |
<=
I suggested that later I may add some exterior lighting along the perimeter of
the base focused inward as this would also help in the ground illumination. Beside
most base installations use this technique anyway. |
=>
Lastly, this is a rad render of the main turret. just giving you an idea of the lighting installation and positions. |

| In the beginning I misunderstood the concept size of the base and designed extra buildings which allowed for a larger support facility.
The original idea was for 2 hanger bays, so I figured a flight tower would be needed and also a Command Operations Center to coordinate and support unit movements. These additions would bring the base occupancy up considerably. However I was informed that the base compliment was comprised of a dozen or so Raiders and a platoon or 2 of Toasters. So the un-textured items in the next set of images are out of the plans and will be shelved unless they are needed later.
| |
<=
I built the hangers with an underground tunner (false) that theoretically went back to the main facility. The idea was that ne wraiders could be fed to the hangers without transporting them topside
=> The hangers are also fully equiped with a lighting rig indoors and tarmack lighting as well.

A close shot of the hanger reveals the inside support trussing which also spans the roof sections in full detail.

This is the aerial shot of the base with the un needed additions and the Tillium Tanks
| |
<=
Tilium Tanks are a throw back to the original series, I built the tanks in a set of two but I think for the final shoot there will be only one section of tanks set between the hangers. |
=>
I had an idea for the C.O.C. biulding to be accessed by a long above ground causeway. The design was solid but too bad the concept is not part of the script. |
| |
<=
I built th causeway with the same idea in mind that the base is very much pre fabricated and able to be dismantled at a moments notice. |

| According to the script, the Cylon base was built on top of an Existing facility. This existing alien facility was in place and thriving before the Cylons took over the compound and built there own structures atop the ruins. The Alien society had it's own style and architecture, so I had to develop something that would be visually different from the cylon architecture and have it built into the landscape. . . .
This is where I am at the moment, Knee deep in building a prototype for the Alien architecture. I plan on building one basic structure that can be changes slightly from one building to the next and each building serving a separate task. Once all the buildings are made, I will de-construct them to give an appearance of dilapidation and wear, making it look like the Cylons pounded the hell out of them.

<=
The concept for the "Grey Facility" was a colaboration between RJ Andron and I. We bounced a lot of ideas around and used concept eliments from a variety of places.
=>
What we decided on was a look an feel of something very organic but not too too alien. Something that would reflect an alien culture but be functional in space. |
| |
<=
At the moment this is where I am in the project, trying to surface and build this Grey Facility structure. The circumference of the building is over 300ft in Diameter, and almost 200 ft high |
=>
I know . . . the front entrance has an entire Stargate thing happening, it just seemed logical it would be round. RJ came up with that idea because originally the entrance way was triangular. |
| |
<=
More texturing needs to be done before I can release the mesh, but I promissed the folks over at the 14th colony project that I would have this for them soon, so I guess I should get on it. |
=>
I must say I am extremely happy with the way this came out . . I wish all my projects could shape up like this. |
